Any parents or students out there gearing up for summer? While the only noticeable change for me may be a shorter commute (less drivers–yay!!), I am excited to start thinking about a few summer vacations we’re hoping to take. Camping, hanging out by the water, heading up to Colorado to escape the heat and back up to Michigan to see family…just to name a few! We’ll see if they all get packed into the summer! In the meantime, I’ll just have to pull out some bright clothes and re-read the Hunger Games. This girl is seriously obsessed with those books. They are the first books that make me wish I was in a book club. I could discuss them for hours. So if you’re equally as obsessed, please let me know. I think John would appreciate someone else listening to me go on and on about them!

Lately I’ve been drawn to simple outfits. Maybe I’m in a bit of an inspiration slump? Or perhaps it just the warmer weather that makes me shy away from layers, light scarves, and long hair. Either way, it’s reiterated to me that my go-to outfit is a pair of jeans, a tshirt, and a blazer. When I first bought this blazer, it was a difficult purchase due to its price…even on sale! But I’m so glad my shopping partner convinced me to buy it because I’ve worn it about a thousand times. Do you have any pieces like that, and are they part of your own go-to outfit? I’d love to hear your own easy outfit choices so I can try them out for myself!

I did it again this week. I wore navy socks with black shoes. I seriously need to start turning on the light when picking out socks. Anybody else have that problem? Either that or I get 2 of the same color with different patterns in them. Good thing today is a Friday so I can recover some sleep this weekend! On a very happy note, some of our close friends had a baby on Wednesday! We spent some time yesterday at the hospital cuddling with their cute baby boy. Healthy mom, healthy baby. What more can you ask for? Congrats to Matt and Jennifer–we couldn’t be more excited for you two! (I mean three!)

For the past year or so, you may have noticed that my hairstyle has changed just a little bit from this. I usually see-saw between short and long hair, and at the moment, I’m trying to grow it out longer than it’s ever been. I love the long loose curls I’ve been seeing on the internet and decided that I could do that too. This past Thanksgiving, I scored a Black Friday deal on a new 1″ CHI flat iron (similar to these). I love using straighteners for curling hair (thanks to Shannon!). I think they give a really natural wave since the curls never look “perfect.” Not long after buying my CHI, Misikko asked if I would review their 1.5″ Hana Flat Iron. Since I had just purchased a CHI, I thought it would be great to share my own pros/cons for the two in case you’re on the look out for one too. The curls below are from this Hana Flat Iron, but you can see some from this CHI Flat Iron in this post.

The Hana Flat Iron has titanium plates with tourmaline, and the CHI has tourmaline ceramic plates. I couldn’t tell a difference between the materials in practice, but based on the research I’ve done, titanium is supposed to help straighten hair faster and tourmaline is known for its smoothing properties. Since my hair is naturally pretty straight, both worked fine for me!

Both brands come in various widths, but I prefer the 1″ width. My hair has a hard time holding curl, so making a tighter curl with the 1″ flat iron tends to leave more room for my hair to relax into the style without going flat.

I prefer the grip and ergonomics on the Hana in comparison to the sleek CHI. I knew just where to hold it, and actually, I felt like the Hana actually held onto my hair better too. Not that it was getting caught on my hair, just that it didn’t slide so easily through the blades, which makes it easier to turn the flat iron and create the curls.

The Hana allows for adjustable temperature, which I love. Yeesh, those things get hot! I’m a bit of a klutz when it’s comes to curling my hair, so by lowering the temperature, it allows me to go a little slower without searing my hair.

You’re going to laugh at me for this one, but the Hana came with a rubber mat and travel case, which allows the paranoid me to stop worrying that my flat iron is going to burn my counter top. It’s the simple things, right?

The two have similar retail price points, but since I got the CHI at a Black Friday deal for almost half off, it’s hard to compete with that.

Ready to try something new? I know it sounds crazy at first, but have you ever thought about wearing a tie? I did once…It was quite fun (after I got over my irrational fear of choking). I ran across this little J.Crew number and thought it would be a good way to ease into the trend. A blue tie over a chambray top, and it becomes a subtle, quirky accessory. I love the bright, feminine pant and the pony tail to “tie” it all together.

For my own take on the look, I stuck with the tie since I love its skinny proportions and square end, but feel free to raid your husband’s closet for something similar. Or better yet, buy a tie for him and borrow it once in awhile. So what’s the verdict? Would you ever “try a tie”?

Chambray Shirt (Nordstrom): $24.97

Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend! Sunday around here was pretty rainy, but who doesn’t love a chance to relax and listen to the rain outside the window? Due to the large and delicious brunch I consumed, the afternoon was spent doing just that. We tried out the Saturday night Easter service at our church (this song was amazing…and probably my favorite part) and hosted a small relaxed brunch on Sunday morning. At which point I decided that we really should not wait for Easter again to have brunch. Truly the best meal of the day.

A couple weekends ago, 3 friends and I threw a baby shower for our good friend, Jennifer. Jennifer has decorated the baby’s room with a Dr. Seuss theme, so we couldn’t resist throwing her a Dr. Seuss themed party. I thought you may enjoy seeing a few snapshots from the party.

Create-your-own Goody Bags

A one-of-a-kind cake

Themed Food and Decorations

Name Blocks for the Little One

Planning a shower in the age of Pinterest is so inspiring. For the name blocks above, I was struck by this pin (sorry that I can’t trace it back to the original creator–it looks like this particular items may not be sold on Etsy anymore) and decided that I would try it out for myself. In retrospect, the prices I found on Etsy for similar styles are just as good as what I paid for in materials, so unless you have the materials laying around, I may suggest buying the blocks from Etsy. BUT, if you’re feeling crafty, stop by your local Home Depot / Lowe’s and have them cut up a 2×6 or 2×8 into random sized pieces. Then all you need to do is sand the edges, spray paint the back and sides, and then use a little ModPodge to adhere scrapbooking paper to the fronts of the blocks. Add a few embellishments, and you’re set! I happen to own a Cricut that I used for the letters, but other than that, it’s easy-peasy! However, I do not recommend tipping the container full of ModPodge onto the carpet. Spouses tend to frown upon such behavior. If you have any other questions about the decorations or food, let me know–the ladies that planned this with me are ahhhmazing party planners!

And so it begins. I think I may be the only person in Texas who felt the 80+ degree heat over the weekend and just groaned. It means summer is coming, and with it, temperatures climbing steadily into the upper 90′s and 100+. The only plus are the long hours of daylight, although that means the heat sticks around that much later into the evenings. I did manage to take advantage of the sunny weather with an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday morning. I’ve never seen so many children gathered in one place at one time. Overwhelming to say the least. I (of course) took a nap in the afternoon to recover.

So while I didn’t intend to take a week and a half off, it was a much needed break in the midst of 3 busy weeks, including 2 trips out of town and a baby shower for a friend at my home. Yeesh—I don’t consider myself a homebody, but seriously?! How do people work AND travel every weekend? I’m so thankful my sweet husband offered to clean up the house for the baby shower and that he doesn’t mind that I still haven’t unpacked from our last trip…

Here are a few photos from the last day of the Texas Style Council (taken by the lovely Jill of good life). The symposium was wonderful. I learned so much from the many great speakers. Here are a few of my favorite take-aways: (I apologize in advance for not crediting everyone–many of the topics were discussions between several speakers, and I didn’t write it all down quickly enough!)

Live a great life, not a big life (from Kendi on why you shouldn’t be too concerned about how big your blog is)

Networking can grow your blog, but it also creates good friends (I met SO many great people that weekend, and it was fun to be able to talk about blogging with others so passionate about it)

Become a trusted and unique source for your readers

Take a step back and prioritize your blog and life, evaluating where your blog is, and what you want it to be

That last one is my current focus, and it may not be a few days (or even a few weeks), but I have many ideas swirling around in my head for this blog!
